Susan Aprill and Alice K. Sum Recognized in Florida Trend’s 2020 “Legal Elite”

Fowler White Burnett is pleased to announce that Commercial Litigation Shareholders Susan Aprill and Alice K. Sum have been recognized in Florida Trend Magazine’s Florida Legal Elite 2020 in the area of Civil Trial.

Florida Trend invited all actively practicing Florida lawyers to name the attorneys that they hold in highest regard – lawyers with whom they have personally worked and would recommend to others. Florida Trend’s Legal Elite list of 1,071 honorees represents 1.4% of active Florida Bar members who practice in Florida.

Susan Aprill practices civil litigation, representing, among others, clients in business, real estate and employment disputes, and associations defending claims against officers and directors related to statutory and contract issues. She has in recent years handled casualty claims concerning high net worth victims with respect to damages; and frequently represents clients in disputes involving business deadlocks and dissolution actions. She has served as a court-appointed receiver in a variety of cases and as an arbitrator in a complex medical practice break-up, as well as a special master and mediator. She is a longstanding member of the Florida Bar Media & Communications Law Committee, serving as co-author of multiple chapters in The Reporter's Handbook, a Bar publication. Last year, she served as organizer of a panel on access to courts, privacy and court records for the Office of the State Court Administrator's Advanced Judicial College. First appointed in 2016 and re-appointed in 2019 to a 4-year term, Ms. Aprill serves on the Fourth District Court of Appeal Judicial Nominating Commission. Ms. Aprill is a graduate of the University of Miami School of Law where she served on its Law Review.

Alice K. Sum represents clients in a wide range of complex business disputes, including multi-party and class action litigation concerning director and officer liability, securities, intellectual property, banking and financial services, and real estate issues. She is an elected member of The Florida Bar Board of Governors for the 11th Circuit and serves on the Judicial Nominating Commission for the 17th Judicial Circuit, nominated by The Florida Bar and appointed by the Governor. She previously served on The Florida Bar’s 17th Judicial Circuit Grievance Committee "I" and as Vice-Chair of the Judicial Nominating Procedures Committee. She is a member of the Board of Directors for the Dade County Bar Association and past-president of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of South Florida. Sum received her J.D. from the University of Florida Levin College of Law and her B.A., with honors, from the University of Florida.
